Day One Setting off to Masterton
About to set off on our (my cycling bicycling machine and I) little adventure to Masterton, Pahiatua, Levin, and home, our first overnight adventure.
When I was planning the purchase of this bike over the last couple of years, this is almost exactly the route I thought I'd end up doing as a first little "mini tour" and so it was.
It may look like I'm carrying a lot of water bottles, but once over into the Rimutaka Hill and into the Wairarapa, I was definitely not carrying too much. It turned out to be a hot and humid day ''over the hill'' and even the locals were saying it was a hot day - which I was pleased to hear, as I did think the ride to Masterton was a little harder than I thought it should have been. From home to Featherston was the easier of the two sections.
The hardest part was from Featherston to Masterton. (For those who don't know the local geography, the first section included a steep to very steep climb up the Twin Lakes Passing Lane, then the long and winding steep climb up Rimutaka Hill.
The Featherston to Masterton section was virtually dead straight and flat for 35km.)
Garmin seems to double the Elevation Gain. If you half what Garmin says, I think that is about right. The Max Height etc seems correct though.
